NUST Participates in WAPDA’s Conference on “Application of AI for Water Resources Planning & Management” in Lahore

Lahore, February 27, 2025 – A delegation from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) actively participated in a day-long conference on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for water resources planning and management. The conference, organized by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) at WAPDA House, Lahore, aimed at fostering innovation and exploring AI’s potential in improving the water resources sector.

The event gathered eminent scholars, researchers, and students from leading institutions across Pakistan. Representing NUST, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan, Principal & Dean, School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (NUST), delivered a keynote address on ‘Leveraging AI in Water Resources Planning, Engineering & Management.’ In his deliberation, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan emphasized academia’s role in advancing AI application for sustainable water management. He highlighted how NUST has adapted its curriculum to incorporate technological and industrial needs, ensuring that students are equipped with the latest advancements in AI applications.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal, a faculty member of the NUST Institute of Civil Engineering, presented his paper at the conference titled “AI in Water Resource Management: A Review of Innovations and Challenges.” Additionally, Prof. Dr. Hamza Farooq Gabriel chaired the first session of the conference, contributing to discussions on AI’s impact in the field.

A group of 10 students from SCEE-NICE also attended the conference, engaging in insightful discussions on how AI technologies can revolutionize water resource management in Pakistan. Their participation underscored the university’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, innovation, and collaboration with key stakeholders in this crucial domain.
